A recent study conducted by Ohio State University projects the U.S. will be short 1,300 general surgeons within two years' time—and lacking 6,000 of these specialists by 2050—due to increasing population demand. The figures are based on information from The American Board of Surgery and the U.S. Census Bureau, including medical school graduation rates and population statistics.

At present, there are approximately 21, 500 general surgeons active in the U.S. Among the 1,000 surgeons who enter the workforce annually, estimates report that more than half go into other surgical subspecialties, further exacerbating the shortage.

Study co-author Thomas E. Williams, a clinical associate professor of surgery and retired thoracic and cardiac surgeon, says the field of medicine, in general, must become more appealing for the situation to improve: "What we need to do is make this profession more attractive through programs to help reduce costs and arranging the 80 hour work weeks to more manageable schedules. Without these changes, we simply won't keep up with the increasing demand."

The study was recently published in Surgery.
